It is still hot and humid this Thursday morning, rare for Winnipeg. Our profound apologies to the brave condo dogs and condo cats who had to suffer that impressive storm and thunder display before midnight. We agree, that was totally unacceptable.
For the first time in our lives there will be no community newspaper delivered to our doors this morning. No Lance newspaper, not even its latest substitute, the Community Review. St. Vital’s Leech family informed us of local community events for generations. Bob Silver and his business partners have tried to keep the lights on with the Winnipeg Free Press. Despite the loss of our community newspaper, please keep your Free Press subscriptions. Many North American cities do not have a major newspaper. Let’s not be one of them.
So now, by necessity, we are all community reporters. This is the Creek Bend community report.
Dozens of dump trucks dropped gravel on Sioux Road West yesterday. (see photos). The road has never felt such love. If Councillor Brian Mayes got the community a grant in order to do that, our thanks.
A gang of hard-working boys from Valley Fibre’s contractors hand trenched fibre optic through the groves of trees on rural Creek Bend this week. It was hot and exhausting work. Our thanks.
The balconies at 100 Creek Bend are almost ready to receive their first panes. They will look wonderful when they are finally done. We will finally get to see the new barbecues that the Creek Bend owners have carefully stored away. We can already imagine the chops, steaks and burgers to be grilled on those decks in September.
Despite ads for 2028 completion dates, there is still no sign of construction at 1269 St. Anne’s or at 180 Creek Bend. The Canadian construction industry is in flux. We are glad that we already have our homes by the Seine River.
The new Creek Bend bridge looks like it has always been there. Sad that local politicians never got a chance to cut a ribbon officially opening it.
Fenella and her hard-working SOS Landcare team will be blitzing behind the Oxbow complex the next two Friday mornings (see ad) Fenella is death on invasive species. The weeds should be scared. Consider dropping by and learning how to stop invasive weeds in their tracks.
The SOS Riverkeepers should have done their first sweep of the river by now. Does it look cleaner?
Local beaver have certainly kept local river levels high this summer. Please try not to notice any felled trees. Beavers will do what beavers must do.
While local deer fawns have mostly lost their spots, there are still a few latecomers about with spots. Canada geese teenagers are vigorously flapping their wings on the river. Expect practice flights very shortly.
The Precinct K DASZ subdivision and rezoning approval process is still ongoing. Rural Creek Bend residents are still trying to figure out their options.
Still two more years until the traffic lights are finally installed at Creek Bend and St. Anne’s. Until then, be safe.
No wannabe politicians or their yard signs in the area yet. Until then, thanks to Brian and Markus for their work over the last few years. We hope that lots of new opportunities are waiting for them in our community.
