Creek Bend Beaver Dam Mystery

At Monday’s CBRA board meeting I learned that an unknown person had recently installed rebar and reinforcement onto the long-time Creek Bend beaver dam, raising the massive wooden log barricade even higher. Their reason for doing this is unknown. The beavers had already raised the Seine by over a foot in the area. They obviously did not need any human assistance. I walked the rough trail and braved the wood ticks Tuesday morning to see what was going on at the river bend. To my surprise I found no rebar in sight, the dam breached and a torrent of Seine River water flowing through the gap. A smaller dam just to the west had also been breached. As a local resident observed, “There is now no sign of rebar or posts pushed vertically into the dam – though several of us had seen them earlier.”

The SOS River Keepers (Green Team) who just started on Monday deny making any dam breaches. When asked, they frankly told me, “We do not mess with beaver dams or lodges.”

While some sort of an environmental guerrilla war seems to be going on in the Seine River Greenway, we have no idea who the 2 sides are, or what it is that they want to accomplish.
